Default Excited to learn from you all!

    Hi guys,

I currently reside in West Virginia and have for most of my life. I did live in DC for work for a while before returning to WV. I'm an adventurous outdoorsman who can't get enough of the fresh air. Professionally, I'm a Civil Engineer specializing in Hydraulics/Hydrology. This particular specialty has afforded me lots of opportunities to GET PAID to study and survey beautiful rural streams and forests (what a scam right??). This is only to feed my wife and my outdoor sports addictions though...

I'm grateful to have been allowed to join this group to learn as much as I can about recreational long range shooting in the mountains and the general "gun culture" in Colorado before I arrive. Hopefully you all don't mind sharing your thoughts about socially acceptable places to shoot in the BLM and national forests. In WV, it is illegal to shoot anywhere (generally speaking) that is not private land or designated shooting ranges. I'm excited about the idea of having lots of open land I can drive out to and hike out a ways before setting up a target and working out my long rifle. I'm wanting to learn from everyone how to do this in a responsible and non-disruptive manner to other people using the land as well.

Thanks for reading all that! Have a great night.

Hello and welcome! I'm not sure of the particulars, but be sure there will be somebody with more knowledge to give you the break down on it. Enjoy!!

Check out the site andthen ask away with your questions. One thing that drew me to this site so many years ago was how friendly and easy going folks were and how accepting of "newb" questions people were. I've learned so much from the people here it's amazing.

Not a whole lot of places in/around the Springs for long range shooting, but Frontier Sportsman's Club (FSC; https://frontiersportsman.org/) has 2 outdoor ranges - one with a 1000 yard range. They say they have a 2 years wait to join, but if you get an application in now you may just be accepted next March when they go through their annual Memberships again. I think it costs $200 for the first year and just $100 every year after that. There are no charges for range use beyond the annual membership fee. You do have to be an NRA member to join though. There are other publicly available places to shoot around the Springs as well and there is always the National Forest - but be warned, many NF areas are getting closed to shooting due to irresponsible shooters not ensuring the safety of others, not cleaning up after themselves and being overall destructive to the forests. You can learn about that once you arrive.

    Welcome to COAR!
