Default How Big Is Your Turkey?

Keeping in the vain of mindless drivel, I thought I'd start a thread to find out how big the turkeys are that our members will be roasting.

Since we always like lots of leftovers I always look for the largest turkey I can find (without spending $25 for the bird). This year, the biggest one I could find for $10 @ King Soopers weighed in @ 24.37lbs.

I sure do miss the days of being able to get one of these big birds for $5, but I can't complain to much for a $10 bird. (I know; I know.... some of you would be happy to give me the bird for free ).

    I smoked one last year.

It took me forever to get it lit!

Actually, I've got 2 turkeys under 12 lbs. still in my freezer from last year for either smoking or deep frying.

Just bought a 21lb bird for Thanksgiving. Already had one for member Splogan and the family since they left for Japan two weeks ago.

Did a 19lb bird for the work potluck last week. Last year I canned 2 22lb birds. Still have 15 pints left so none this year.

Ours is 24 lbs also. Its just the ywo of us also. Plus I get one from work and they are usually around 20lbs. So we always have lots of left overs.

We cook one in the oven and one I cook the other one in the grill outside. The grill turkey is always my favorite!!

You know, I'm not really that fond of turkey. I think I'll do a prime rib.

    Beef. It's whats for dinner.

One year, my wife did a crown rack of lamb. Yes, for thanksgiving. Let me tell you, I was thankful that year!

    Default Turkey Recipe

    Ingredients:
    1 whole turkey
1 large lemon, cut into halves
    salt and pepper to taste
butter or olive oil, whichever you prefer

    Heat oven to 350 degrees

Rub butter or oil over the skin of the turkey until it is completely coated.
Sprinkle with salt and pepper and any other seasonings you prefer.

    Take a knife and gently separate the skin from the breast meat;

Slide lemon halves under the skin with the peel side up, one on each side. This way the juice from the lemon will release into the breasts.

Cover and bake for 30-45 minutes. Remove cover and continue to roast until juices run clear, basting every 15-20 minutes.

If you've followed these steps correctly, your turkey should look like the one in the picture.

    Bon Appetit!

I've never heard of canning turkey. Can you IM me the process for that?

I haven't grilled a turkey before but I've been thinking about getting a smaller turkey to cut the breast, thighs, and other meat off of the bone to grill.

Since I hate ham and the family is tired of turkey @ Christmas, I usually get a SMALL ham for my wife and kids for after Christmas leftovers but make a prime rib roast for the main meal.
