Exclamation Dogs ate chocolate...lots of it.

Edit: title should be Dogs ATE chocolate. [FIFY]

One or both of my dogs, both about a year old, got into a bowl of mini chocolate bars an hour or so ago. About 90 of them disappeared, wrappers and all.

I've been reading about this and the data says that eating 1 ounce per pound of body weight can be really bad news. If 1 dog ate 90 of these, that's. 22.5 oz. of chocolate. Both dogs are 50 - 60 pounds, so I THINK they'll be ok. Maybe some puking and diarrhea tonight.

I did decide to try to induce vomiting with a small dose (1 tsp) of hydrogen peroxide diluted 50/50 with water. They haven't puked yet. It been about 15 minutes and both are acting completely normal.

I will closely monitor them tonight and sleep right next to them in case anything bad happens and go to an emergency vet if necessary.

Anyone else have experience with this?

Keep in mind that milk chocolate isn't 100% chocolate so those numbers can be adjusted to a little better if its milk chocolate. Now if they're eating "high percentage cacao" dark chocolate you should get them to the vet for some medically induced vomiting.

But if they're acting ok, they'll likely be ok.

The wrappers are probably more harmful than the chocolate (since they can cause blockages).

Make sure you see them poop in the next day.

When my wife was growing up he had a toy fox terrier (like 8lb dog) eat a bag of Hershey's Kisses and other than some diarrhea it was fine.

Might not hurt to call their vet tomorrow during regular business hours and go over this whole kerfuffle .

Hope they are okay. I'm up to my eyes in pet bills and pet related issues lately.

our dogs got in to the daughters chocolates during a visit. 1 box, as in literally the entire box, wrappers and all were consumed. Outside of some midnight needing to go out, again. Nothing presented itself to warrant a trip to the vet.

Both just darted outside barking like mad to confront an imaginary villain to impress me, so I don't think they're feeling any I'll effects (yet).

GilpinGuy is probably looking at two dogs full of porcupine quills as I write this.

I've had several do the chocolate thing. Never that much, though. They've always been fine. I'd say if they aren't showing any ill effects yet they probably won't. But I'd be worried sick. Good luck...hoping they're fine.

I can't imagine having 90 chocolates in my house long enough for my dog to even find them.

For blockages feed them cooked white rice. Bloats and lubes them up. Our last lab seemed to enjoy eating rocks and more than once he was fed white rice for the day until the explosion occured.
