Currently, Winchester Miroku is shipping $1,000 - $1500 firearms in $.50 worth of styrofoam and cardboard. I strongly in the keep the end label, recycle or trash the rest, unless it's actually a nice box. Handgun boxes are a bit easier to keep for resell, as needed.

Who knew? Waaaayyyyy back when, all guns pretty much came in cardboard boxes and I tossed them and put my guns in soft cases. I still put my guns in soft and hard cases for storage and transport. Because some buyers place importance on having original cardboard boxes, I now keep them. I stack them up on a shelf in the garage. I don't have a lot and they take up little room so not a hassle for me.
The important thing is to make sure that the box goes with the gun when it is sold or passed on so that they do not build up. I have a couple of collectors with original boxes and paperwork but I don't store the guns in the boxes as I do occasionally shoot them (what are guns for if not ton shoot?) so I keep the guns in padded hard cases so the boxes don't get chewed up for handling.

For some guns (obviously collector types...but not exotic or anything) the original boxes and/or paperwork can add hundreds of dollars to the value of a gun. And, like Skip pointed out, when you resell the gun and have everything it came with when new, it does seem to add some perceived value to the buyer, in my experience.

As a buyer, if I find identical guns, I'm usually willing to pay more for a gun with the original box.

I just ran into this yesterday. There are two pretty much identical Heritage Rough Rider revolvers for sale on Armslist here...mine and another. I priced mine at $125, the other is priced at $100 but the model/condition appears to be identical. A guy called me from CDA and is coming down today to buy my gun. Nevermind the fact I wouldn't drive 220 miles roundtrip for a $100 gun, but whatever... He said he saw the other one but thought mine was the better deal because it had the box and paperwork.

Anything old enough to have additional value from the correct box has it kept. In the off chance I buy something new if it's interesting enough to get additional value from the case (see something like a M9A3), the case gets kept. If it's generic ruger whatever it gets tossed.

Original packaging has no value. If you try to sell an old box you’ll come to a similar conclusion.

It’s nice to have the original package with a sub gun, but it makes no difference to the sale price.

That's just one example of hundreds on GunBroker. Original packaging has value to some people, obviously.

I don't have a huge inventory, so I keep them.

I tossed the box for my Scorpion recently, but still have the box for my AUG, Savage and the hard cases for the AR and M1.

I still have my 1951 Colt Huntsman stored in its box, along with several 1960s-70s Smith and wessons stored in their boxes. The only box I wish I had was for the 1878 Smith. Most of the new boxes are thrown away, other than a few plastic pistol cases. They dont take up near as much room.
