Default 143 Years ago & 69 years ago (military history)

Today is an interesting day in military history. EDIT: WHOOPS, FORGOT TO INCLUDE LINKS. NOW ADDED.

June 25, 1876: Lt Col. George A. Custer and 225 members of the US 7th Cavalry are killed at the battle of the Little Bighorn in current-day Montana by a combined force of Sioux, Cheyenne and Arapahoe warriors. An unknown number of Indians were also killed along with several civilians, one of whom was Custer's brother Boston (Custer's other brother, Thomas, a staff officer in the 7th cavalry, was killed at Little Bighorn as well.) The battle was one of the largest engagements in the Indian wars and was pretty much the "peak" of the Indian wars on the plains. Following their victory at LBH the Sioux, Cheyenne and Arapahoe were relentlessly pursued and engaged by large elements of the US Army until they finally agreed to return to their reservations in late 1876.

June 25, 1950: The North Korean Peoples Army (NKPA) launches a major offensive across the 38th Parallel in Korea, igniting the Korean war. By the time the armistice was signed in 1953, more than 33,000 Americans were killed and over a million Koreans. The Korean War was the first large scale military conflict of the Cold War and the first time the Articles of the United Nations charter were used to justify military action.

If you love your freedom, thank a veteran. If you love to party, thank the Beastie Boys. They fought for that right.
