    Default Split CV Boots

Just realized yesterday I had a small cut in my outer front CV boot. I think I spotted it in time before any axle damage. Ordered a split boot kit today to avoid taking the end of the axle apart. Advance had them for $32 with their coupon code. Anyone else try this method of repair ?

I've replaced boots on an axle, and repaired them with grease. Honestly it's easier to just replace the entire thing. So like most things, if you take the time and effort, you can save money.

^ Yeah my son offered to do it for me but I hate to take up his time unless it's necessary. I just wondered if anyone had tried the repair with a split boot kit.

I've seen every split boot fail. Never have seen one that didn't. It is a band aid.

I have only replaced the boot or the entire axle. Replacing the boot is more work, but you will save money as Irving noted above. It seems to me that the split boot kits are gimmick. Fine if you need a temporary fix, but once the boot cracks, you should replace the grease anyway as junk is going to get into the grease.

Good luck and let us know how it works out.

I guess I?m just cheap because I usually just buy a boot and replace it. I?ve bought OEM boots for Hondas, Toyotas, and Nissans and they?re usually around $15-$20.

I do know people who just replace the entire axle assembly when the boot tears. It seems you can get complete axles for most vehicles for around $50 these days and just pop them in and not mess with all of the mess or the clamps.

My time is worth more than replacing the boot pop a new axle in and move on with my life. But stag knowing you are retired and maybe on the fixed income arena
it may be worth the 40-50 dollar savings

Mrs BG's car is in the shop at the local Chevy dealer for this very problem. They're replacing both sides for $215. It was partially covered by some special warranty. Sounded like a pretty good deal to me.
