    Default S&W Sport II ?

My younger son found new S&W M&P Sport II rifles for $500 shipped. It will be his first AR. He?s quite accomplished with a pistol but is new to the AR world outside of shooting mine. How are Smiths? Seems like a good price for a nib carbine.

    Any feedback appreciated.

I wouldn't be afraid of it. The few I've seen function well, and everything on it is replaceable should you later decide to upgrade or customize in any way.

I have several palmetto rifles in that entry/budget price range. They've never given me any trouble.

I have an early one with several thousand through it. Have had zero issues.
I just remembered I also have a really early one I got used from a member here that probably has more like 6-7k with no issues.

I've heard some grumbling from some nay-sayers, but I've had great luck with mine, FWIW.

Lots of family/friends range time on both, as well.

This son shares my affinity for high end 1911s and older S&W revolvers. For him the AR is more of a novelty, he doesn’t want to drop a lot of money on something he won’t shoot that often. He is quite familiar with my improved Colt and his older brother’s (a freshly minted Army E7) custom built carbine.

All gun mfg's offer lifetime warranty. Some are good, no matter who owns it. Others want your BOS, copy of DL, blood sample etc, before they even send you a will call tag, if that.

I had a gen 1 Mini-14 the bolt cracked on. In to ruger, out with updated internals free of charge.

My Walther P-22. Called S&W. Was told oh those are warrantied a year. No i'm sorry, we don't offer free repairs any more, click.

Not familiar with that one so take a look how/where they cut corners. Ex: no dust cover, no fwd assist, etc. Buy if he don't care .....
Or have him build a PSA if it is a range toy.

It has the dustcover and forward assist. The early ones didn’t. Magpul flip rear sight w/standard “A” tower front sight.
