I honestly think the ME degree is one of the most useful. If you can get through the math, you're obviously pretty smart. The required courses give you the tools to understand how just about everything in the world works, women excepted. I personally got tired of corporate aerospace engineering about 20 years ago and struck out on my own, but I'm thankful for the breadth of knowledge I got. My days in school pre-date modern CAD. My drafting class was actually pencil and paper, if you can believe it. I assume they're teaching modern computational techniques now. Out of curiosity, what software packages are in vogue now?

SolidWorks, MasterCam, and Ansys seem to be the most common. SolidWorks and Ansys are integrated into the ME curriculum as well, which is good for me since that's what is used at my job (internship).

As a student you can get other cad software for cheap. I highly sugest learning as many various CAD systems as you can. All of them have strengths and weaknesses. You will be surprised how many employers will either love you or hate you because you dont have their flavor of CAD.
