This is a good post. Also, if at the time or the reporting it's an active incident, the perp is indeed an active shooter. It's a bad look to see a report about cops and innocent bystanders being fired upon and to respond about how active shooter is an incorrect term or that shooting at people/having whatever gun in Jersey is already illegal.

An actively-occurring shooting without any other details? I remember shooting or shootout. Active shooter frankly seems like the perfect term to describe a presently-occurring event involving some sort of shooting.

Thank you for providing a rational discussion. I think the generic term "shooting" could be used for most every event until the fact are known, especially in the media. What the LEO community uses internally is their business. "Active Shooter" carries too much baggage and political connotation, kinda like "Gun Violence".

Well, back in what we call, "the day", there wasn't a term for crimes in progress since there wasn't constant, immediate access to everything that was happening, everywhere.

So we would get home, watch the news and shake our collective heads at the dirtbags killing each other.

Doing a little research, term "active shooter" made it's appearance in the current environment in the immediate post-9/11 era. It's use and sensationalization has continued to expand ever since.

I'm sure the headline "Crime in Jersey" would be very helpful. Just as you'd differentiate robbery, fraud, rape, or murder, especially if it was currently happening, specificity is important.

Who is "we" that you ask about? The people on this site? I think I've seen these horribly tragic events described here on this site as "a fake news hoax with crisis actors paid by Soros & the Lib Dims". Maybe instead of using the objectionable term "Active Shooter" that offends such sensitive feelings here, we can suggest the media, reporters, police officers, EMTs & others responding to the scene stop using that displeasing verbiage & start using more gun-sensitive words. Maybe instead of "Active" they can say "Currently Doing" and instead of "Shooter" they could say "Human with a weapon that fires bullets" and the headline would be "Human with a weapon that fires bullets currently doing attempted murder and successful murder". Better?
