I thought HC people wanted to be treated no different than anyone else?

Said by no person with a real HC ever. When you're unable to function normally, even small things that people don't think about in their daily lives can be limiting.

When working in a high rise building, I have to pretty much concede that I may not make it out alive if I have to evacuate via the stairs.

You don't have to go out of your way to not be an asshole to those that need accommodations. Being thoughtful about someone other than yourself shouldn't be 'special treatment'.
