Colorado Laws Concerning Found Firearms ?

A co-worker found a firearm today along a Metro area Highway, This is not as unusual as you might think, beings that we work along the Highways daily.
Anyway, he would like to legally be able to claim it & keep it, Buthelezi and I do not know the proper way to do this. And of course be able to find out if is a discarded, reported stolen firearm or reported lost before starting any filing of a claim if such a thing exists in this fine state.
So, can anybody point me in the right direction to tell my co-worker ?

Figure out when it was manufactured, and then see if he can describe who he bought it from in a private party sale back in 2010. Golly, did he have handlebar mustache? Maybe kind of heavyset, no wait, kind of normal, ah hell maybe you all forgot by now.



In reality there is a significant chance it is reported lost or stolen. If you contact local, they will want all personal information and how you acquired it. You could take it to a pawn shop, which is obligated to hold it a few days and run it by LEO. If you can pick it up, it's clear.

^^ This. I watch true crime shows, there have been cold cases solved by someone finding a tossed firearm and turning it in.

Let me clear a few things up,
I didn’t find it, all the ones that I have found have been so rusted & corroded or so damaged by the landscaping crew running a brush hog over them and damaging them so bad that they were scrap metal, that I would take a shovel and give them a proper burial.
I let this guy know he should just call the State Patrol & turn it over to them, but he was wanting to know if there was a way to find out if it was reported stolen or lost and if it could be claimed to keep it.
By the way, it was found near a major accident scene from several months ago where several vehicles left the pavement violently.
