    Tell me this individual did not take possession of the item in question?
    If they did they just made things more complicated than need be.
    I would think the wisest course of action would be to contact the municipality it was found in and do not offer that they found a firearm. Merely state you have "found" property. The responding officer should be able to guide the finder to the appropriate resource within the department for the possibility of ability to claim it.
    I dont see it happening though honestly.
    The most important thing to be learned from those who demand "Equality For All" is that all are not equal...

    I remember seeing a Forensic Files episode where a guy had fired a warning shot into the ground in the front yard of his home during an altercation. Many years later there was a murder and they were trying to figure out if he did it. They managed to find the bullet in the ground and it matched up to the murder bullet. Seemed like a 'needle in a haystack' moment.
