So, serious question: Is this "run" coming from people who have NEVER owned guns suddenly wanting one? Or from people who already own guns wanting more guns?

The 2013 "ammo panic" was largely a response to an expectation of draconian laws (which ultimately never materialized) by people who were already gun owners.

I guess I'm just curious about the mentality of people who didn't think they needed or wanted a gun before and now all of a sudden they want one. I presume they are expecting civil unrest/rioting/looting etc, which AFAIK hasn't happened in the other areas hit by the virus.

There's a lot of discretionary income out there. Our Government is 20 Trillion Dollars in debt.

    They're shopping because they can.

Today it's Guns, yesterday it was Land Cruisers, etc.

Same reason people that don’t stock a months supply of food are all the sudden grabbing at scraps. Th way never plan ahead for events. And they have never been raised to believe what’s happening could be happening

This is the result of 2 things:

    Media hype.

No clue for sure but I have a family friend in his thirties who approached me yesterday for advice as he is wanting to buy his first firearm. He?s looking at getting a handgun.

Anyhow, after telling him he picked a horrible time to buy, I quizzed him a bit on why he now decided he wanted to own a firearm.

To my surprise, it had very little to do with the current situation in our country. Apparently he has been wanting something for a while now and I think maybe it was just the right time for him financially. He said he used to shoot with friends when he was in high school and that those friends still shoot so wants something to have to go out with them. He also mentioned it would also serve as home protection but I didn?t really get the impression that was his main priority for purchasing.

I would guess there are quite a few factors for the recent run. I?m sure the uncertainty of how long this Covid19 stuff will drag out and the longer it does you know the panic and desperation could kick in on a large scale.

There's a difference between food and guns though. Most of us eat food every day. Toilet paper is also something we use every day. Both food and TP are consumable resources.

My anecdotal experience is while at the lgs on Friday, talking with the guys behind the counter, they estimated 75-80% we're all brand new gun owners... I talked to two, which weren't what we would consider "usual" gun folks, but they stressed they felt uneasy with the situation as it's unfolding with everything...also observed some very, shall I say, odd ducks perusing the cases and racks...

I agree that most are new buyers. At 9:00am the queue was 12,300 by 5:15pm it was 12,900. Last Monday morning it was 6,036.

is there a place you can see how many people are in the queue or do you just have to ask the store?
