But the fact of the matter is I, we, don?t know if any particular name which KevDen posts was altruistic or an asshole. All we know is they went out every day, risking their life in ways only a small percentage of society can relate to or realistically imagine.

As such, letting God be their judge on motivations, I think it?s only fitting that we at least acknowledge those men and women.

When the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan were at their occupational peak, I tried to keep up with daily deaths. To read the names, the units, the manner of death. Ultimately, I couldn?t do it anymore. It was just too hard. I only knew a handful over the years, but every one was a cut to the soul to read.

Having never been LE, I would imagine that doing that work of relating to us, who don?t wear that uniform, the fallen, also is a cut to the soul.

We carry, we train, we theorize for our own safety in situations that statistically will never come. Those statistics are far less in favor of the men and women who enforce the law.

If a moment to at least see 1, 7, or 10 fallen people is too much to look at, not even to read in depth, perhaps the mirror is the place to look and question.

Having met Kev and his family, I dont believe he would post a notice for someone if they were known to him as a bad cop. He is a straight forward dude. He is just very passionate about this subject because they are his "brothers".

I will admit, I do not read them all. However, they are no bother to me, just as the monuments at the cemetery don't cause a stir.

I also work in a first responder setting, and honor the sacrifices made by those who serve alongside me. But i personally wouldn’t want an ultimate sacrifice of mine to be reduced to a copy-paste exercise that receives single digit clicks and is imposed upon an audience that largely doesn’t care, or even resents the imposition.

I won’t tell anyone what to do or not do, but I will say for my part that I have refrained from replicating the effort on my side, because I believe it is not appreciated, and is disruptive to the flow and operation of the board. It’s really high volume, and incomplete at the same time. I think it is important to highlight the exemplary, rather than dishonor another’s memory through perfunctory action for the mundane.

For my part, I can write up a script or copy-paste from my daily work bulletin. I trust the management will be accommodating.

My service is especially known for our take on colleagues being regarded as family. Like me, you might walk away with an appreciation for how many line of duty deaths result from falls or cardiac events or motor vehicle accidents or cancer from presumed hazmat exposures decades ago. The EMS side of the house also has their share of hazards and LOD deaths. I hope they will likewise be appreciated.

I suspect, though, that there’s a reason the front page of the newspaper isn’t the obituaries. Even if it is easy enough to turn the page.

I come at this from 2 directions. First...I have no issues with the death notices being posted as they are.

Second...What I do have issues with is the mindset around here that Officers should be honored above other individuals...yet shouldn't be held to a higher standard than others. Their job is to enforce the laws...yet around here they are not expected to even know the laws. It is like having a lawyer that doesn't know the laws...that is the entire basis of their job. To know and enforce the laws.

Officers should be honored...for being held to that higher standard than everyone else.

If an Officer isn't held to a higher standard...then their workplace death is just that...a workplace death...no different from anyone else who dies doing their job.

Ah, I understand now. I read them so it didn't occur to me that was what you meant.

I will read them no matter the location posted.

I don't honestly see how they bother people. It's a minor inconvenience, at worst. In another way, it keys into first responder issues - like the wave lately that have been covid deaths (it disproportionately affects older first responders). Whether or not someone is good or bad is pretty irrelevant to a death notice; who here believes judgement is the court of opinion at your funeral? I've always found it distasteful when someone is disrespectful of eath notices for political opponents who we KNOW were shitheads in life (if you don't have anything nice to say...) And I see no issue with posting those either - sometimes there is respect for adversarials. The majority of these first responders on the other hand would have been decent people.

On the sum, most LEO are great, respectful people and try to honor the law. None are perfect and all have failings through the course of their respective careers. That's not to say some aren't creme de' la corrupt but you don't throw the baby out with the bathwater in this circumstance, and so many other careers suffer those same issues in similar proportions. (HR, admin, management, etc.) LEO might have more power than those, but they also often have more accountability and screening.... And in any case it's all pretty irrelevant on their death.

Now, if a national incident like 9/11 were to happen again, then maybe that should be reduced to a single thread, which may better reflect the impact rather than spreading it out individually. Do covid deaths reach that? Not as of yet, there's quite a few, but it is still fairly contained.

And I'm over here wondering what is so upsetting that three posts had to be removed by Mods?

[MOD: Two of the removed posts are explained by one of the participants below - not really bad, but may have been perceived as bad. The 3rd was a duplicate post - Ginsue]

Just scroll past it if you don't care. I'm not asking you to do anything with this information. It's just me passing it on. Sorry for the copy and paste job you all feel is so terrible. It was done so I wouldn't share an opinion or thoughts but post information for a reputable source.
