I downloaded a sample of the book from Amazon. I found the quote-less style very difficult to follow. The movie does sound interesting, though. I'm sure the wife has it on her NetFlix list.

I thought the movie looked interesting until I read the book, and then the thought of seeing it onscreen was no longer appetizing. Just so incredibly doom and gloom.

This is that Viggo Mortenson flick right?
Is the book of the same title? I thought it looked like another version of The Stand to me. That was just from watching the one preview though.

Correct:same book/movie but entirely different from The Stand. This is in a post disaster of some sort setting.

To me, the interest factor is different because it is not a survivable future. It's not about tough times and struggle to survive and rebuild civilization or somesuch, but about the end of all life. Ultimately it was just depressing. Just my opinion...

In general I do not like "We're fucked, lets read about it for 200 pages / look at it for 2 hours" type stories. I go to fiction for inspiration, not depression. If I want depression I can read the news for 2 hours, for free.
