Something that people often forget is that the police and justice system protect the criminal element just as much, if not more, than the general populace.
If they take the measures desired by these groups, like defending the police department etc., the general populace no longer has any restraint in determining when and how to defend themselves. Crime might be slightly higher, but then again, more people would be armed, and things like robbery would have a much higher rate of fatality on both sides of the isle - it would make things chaotic, but it would also make "crime" carry far more immediate risk. Even if you so much as start to graffiti a wall.... Some crazy bastard might shoot you for it. Who is going to arrest them? If you're jurisdiction has severe penalties for owning firearms..... what is actually going to restrain the good guys from having whatever-the-hell-they-want tucked under the counter of their business?
