At 11:18 a.m., local time, on Oct. 12, 2000, the guided-missile destroyer USS Cole (DDG 67) was the target of a suicide attack by terrorists during a routine refueling stop in Yemen?s Aden Harbor. Seventeen U.S. Navy Sailors were killed and 37 were injured in the blast, which tore a 40-by-60 foot hole in the ship?s hull. The crew of Cole fought valiantly for more than 96 hours to save their ship and shipmates. Their actions are the reason why Cole remains a vital part of our Navy today.

My Armor roommate was sitting in an M1A1 tank on Kuwait / Iraq border as either a PL or XO when this occurred. He said they actually got ammo for their M9's as a result.

The USS Cole attack resulted in a refocus on the threat of small boats and an expansion of response postures. My company spent several years doing analysis in the aftermath.

RIP to those personnel who lost their lives.

I worked for a government contractor and while supporting test ops on a new DDG in Pascagoula, MS got to see first hand the damage that was sustained on the USS Cole. It was a surreal moment and one I hope to never see again.
