    Default Colt Dragoon?

My wife?s grandfather died last year and this ended up in our safe, carried by a major in the civil war and handed down through generations. It?s got a 3 digit serial and all numbers matching. Colt has a serial lookup, and there are 46 firearms that match the serial, none of the listed serials match this weapon. There aren?t any caliber markings. It seems to be 44 caliber progressive rifling 7.5? barrel. There are light engravings in the cylinder of a man on a horse, and the words ?colt s*******?. From what I can tell it is a 3rd model Dragoon, or a second model 3rd revision but I?m really just guessing from pictures. Does anyone here know enough about these to know what it is?

    Nice!

What does it say on the top of the barrel?

Looks like English proofs on the cylinder. Maybe London a production example?

Whatever, it is an OUTSTANDING family heirloom!

I am no expert but given the proof marks and the 3 digit serial number I am guessing its a 3rd model dragoon assembled in London if the serial number is below 700. That's quite a piece and although in fair condition is historically significant to Colt collectors. You can send me photos and I'll post them over on the Colt site or you can join. If you send me photos I'll send you a link to the posting so you can see the comments.
I'd like to buy it...but given the family history your MUST MUST MUST keep it in the family. Do you have any other items that came with it like a wooden box or holster? Any extras are an important part of the history of the revolver.

I concur that whatever the value, the weapon needs to remain in the the family.
