    Sorry for the Very Late Posting...

    Whatever You Do... DO NOT "PRETTY IT UP"!!! That Aged Patina is $$$. Yes, Clean & Oil it. Remember... These old beasties were, for the most part, cleaned with soapy (lye soap, that is) water, a rag and greased with animal (generally hog) fat.

    Be Gentle With it when it comes to Cleaning & Lubrication!

    I would go so far as to say do not attempt to clean it, oil it or anything else at this point..

    Also.. as mentioned above, be sure it really is what the family lore says it is, it very well could have simply been grandpa or great grandpas gun that he got who knows where and at some point over the years the current story was attached to it somehow.. just like all the grandpas carried in ww2 bring back garand stories.
