Default anyone title a car without a previous title before?

im looking into buying a meter maid car for fun - 2013 westward go-4. He bought it at auction and never received a title nor got one - ive been looking over the dmv website and does a signed bill of sale count as a ownership documentation and i would just need a Manufacturer's Statement of Origin since there is no valid registration or title?

has anyone done this before and have any tips?

I got a title/plate for a utility trailer that was purchased new out of state and brought here at some point. I got a BOS from the guy here, but you wouldn’t believe the run around the DMV gave me trying to get it registered. I lost count of the trips to various DMVs, had to do a state patrol inspection, records searches in other states...for a friggin $400 trailer. I was 1 set-back away from bringing it to the dump. If I hadn’t already done a bunch of modifications to it I would have.

Maybe a car is easier because it has a VIN to track it?

Ugh. I bought a trailer with a clear Colorado title and bill of sale from the original owner and it took three or four trips to the DMV before I was able to get the title transferred into my name.

I had two motorcycles that I purchased out of state with titles and bills of sale that I gave up on trying to get titled in Colorado and ended up just parting them out.

I wish you luck with your little project.

Surprised you had so much issue on the bikes, maybe weld county dmv just better. Pretty much had a vin inspection done by local PD + title from my bike I bought and rode back from kansas.

I've had to attempt this in several different states in the past, never in CO. FL and NC were relatively easy (BOS+notarized affidavit claiming ownership). CA absolutely would not help in any way. I tried to get a replacement title (replace my own title) and their records pre-computerization don't speak to their new records. They would not title a boat/trailer that I was already the owner of. I hired some help and with a torch and sawzall we cut up a boat and trailer and took it all to the dump. Thanks California!

Ray tell me more on the bikes. I got a 50cc dual use bike I have been working on to get it street legal. But if there is no way to title then it?s gone.
Father in law got it and when his mobile home flooded we lost a box of papers. (Yeah it sounds like a country song....)

I thought 50cc or less didn?t have to be plated or anything?

After living all my life in CO I very much appreciate AZ MVD. Titled and plated a motorcycle here in AZ, and never had to step foot into the MVD, selling is as easy as logging into your MVD account and doing an electronic title transfer.

The bikes were not in road worthy condition when I bought them. I actually bought three of them in various stages of needing work. One did not have a title but the other two did. Had I put the time and energy into getting one of them road worthy I may not have had an issue getting one of them titled here.

I was actually a little cranky about the whole deal. I brought the two bikes and the paperwork to the DMV not realizing they wouldn?t transfer the titles. I had just moved here from another state where if you had a vin and a title you could easily transfer it. These were going to be long term project and I just wasn?t wanting to invest much time or money not knowing for sure if I was going to be able to go back in a year or two with the old dates on the title and bill of sale and get a Colorado title.

Anyhow, I ended up just selling everything for parts.

I have titled 2 boat trailers from Florida that were not titled there.
Bill of Sale and an inspection by the Colorado State Patrol plus two trips (used email while DMV was closed and they responded with emails and directions) or visits with DMV.
If you have a MSO and Bill of Sale from the original owner, you should get a form on your first visit to DMV that you take to the State Patrol and they will inspect it and verify the serial numbers - I think the fee was $50.
You also have to pass the safety inspection - lights, brakes, fenders, etc.
Make an appointment on-line and do not be late or they will reject you for that day and you will have to try again.
