What I posted on another board about your very point:
The RV was broadcasting a warning? Clearly whoever did this didn't read Heinlein's "The Moon is a Harsh Mistress"
For those of you that haven't read it, a quick synopsis of the part I'm referring to (spoiler warning):
- The Moon colony wants independence from Earth.
- The Moon colony doesn't want a war, but needs to demonstrate that they have the power to inflict great damage upon the Earth.
- The Moon colony loads up several supply containers with rocks instead of the usual cargo and sent them towards Earth, not into their usual parking orbit around Earth but straight in.
- The Moon colony can do so with great accuracy, so they target vast, unpopulated areas as demonstrations (remember, the Moon doesn't want to start a war).
- The moon colony warns the Earth that these areas will be demonstration strikes and tells Earth EXACTLY where where the strikes will be so they can assure the areas are evacuated (remember, the Moon doesn't want to start war).
- Earth's government does nothing and allows tens of thousands of people go to the published sites to see the Moon "throw rocks".
- Tens of thousands of people die.
- Earth blames the Moon for the deaths and starts a war.
For those of you watching "The Expanse", yhea, I see it too...
