    Find a custom cabinet shop and see about buying their scraps. There is one that I was able to huy it buy the truck load for $20 a load. All kinds of different hardwoods, just not your normal dimensions. The biggest pieces were around 1x8x28". They let us go through their pile and pick out what we wanted. I got a whole lot of smaller stuff for knife scales.

    they mostly have slabs listed on their website but if you go to the warehouse they have everything from slabs, to rough boards to finished boards to barnwood and beams.

    At Austin, you can have them plane & surface anything you buy for an extra fee. You might have to wait 15 or 30 minutes, but they will do it for you.
