911 call and self defense lesson

Kind of lengthy but worth listening to. The shooting happens at about the 10 min mark. Scary ordeal for this lady. I hope she perseveres. I do think an escalation of force would have been a more desirable scenario but I can't fault her. The 911 operator should have "coached" her a bit. I know that's not there job but.... If the guy was drunk a few verbal warnings followed by a rack of the slide (if applicable) would have spared this ladies apparent grief. And yes the BG too. I'm not going soft but also don't fantasize about killing people.

That is a very powerful and moving clip. Nobody should ever have to go through something like that.

I pray that no one in my family (including myself) ever has to go through anything like that, but... If the situation ever arises, we know that it is up to ourselves to protect ourselves and we are prepared to do what has to be done.

In relating this situation to my wife, she said that she wouldn't feel remorse for shooting and killing someone in a you-or-me situation...initially, but later.... I told her that, while I don't want to HAVE to take the life of someone else, but if I have to, I will and I will not feel remorse for doing what had to be done. To feel remorse gives the BG's sanction to do those things to you. It can cause you to doubt your actions and prevent you from doing the same thing should you be faced with a similar situation again. You have to move foreward knowing that what you did was the right thing to do, no matter how horrible it is.

On a 911 call there are 3 things that may legally help you to have heard/recorded:
(1) This is the most important: I fear for my life.
(2) If the BG enters your home: I have a gun
(3) and: Stay away from me

Wow, that definitely was scary, I can't imagine how that lady feels. Untinately I think did the right thing and did what she needed to. Its unfortunate it took the cops 25 minutes to get to her. Obviously she lived out in a rural area, but still that is a long time. I feel for the lady, but she did what she needed to.

Drunk guy beating at the back door, older lady home alone at what seemed to be around 11ish maybe pm. The property had a fence all the way around, with a locked gate at the entrance so he had to jump the fence some where.

The guy was beating on the glass door, the women called 911, the guy continued to beat in the door, and screaming and yelling. The lady went and got her shot gun, told the 911 operator that she would shoot if she had to but didn't want to. The man continued hitting and kicking the sliding glass door, then picked up a table and broke in the door. The lady shot him, one shot.

IMO its worth listening to the 911 call if you can. It is an eye opener.

One of the Colo Spr local radio stations was talking about this yesterday afternoon and then it was on a local TV news channel last night as well. I didn't realize that this occured this past weekend.

Something else I gleamed from the news report is that Oklahoma does have a Make My Day law similar to Colorado's. the news report showed a photo of this BG - he was in an orange jumpsuit, as in: mugshot.

Oh no, officially they keep saying that she did the right thing and didn't have much other choice to protect herself. What makes the situation so horrible is that she really didn't want to have to shoot the man - she was terrified that she was going to have to do what she inevitably had to do. Afterwords, she had to wait another 10 minutes before LE was able to get to her home. You just can't listen to this without feeling sorry for her and the anguish and regret she has over killing this man.

I was a bit surprised when she gave the 911 operator her son's work number (the son is a Police Chief for, what I understand to be, a Reservation for some Indian Nation somewhat nearby), but she did NOT want them to call her husband at work. Did she think that he wouldn't find out that there was a dead man on his back porch?

I saw pic's of her home on the news last night. It appeared that the gate into her property was 50+ yards from her front door, giving her no real chance of making a run for it.
