Can we just bring back public ridicule in the town square? Seems like it might have a positive effect sometimes.

No, no, no. Feelings would get hurt, and that's the most important thing to avoid at all costs. The pussification is rampant and growing.

I think that's a marvelous idea. Public stocks along public boulevards to punish transgressors. For the elitist frat and sorority college kids in the recent Boulder riot, sentence them to be locked in wooden stocks to face opprobrium. Construct a special drive lane along Broadway from College to University Boulevard where passersby could jeer the fools over days and weeks as they piss and crap their pants while contemplating what they did that got them where they are. An assault against society should be met by public justice and ridicule.

We ended up with about 4-5 inches. Very very snow, the tractor was not having fun plowing it.

    A) Are you out for a family drive?

    B) If you do have to take the family out, bring winter boots/jackets/gloves/etc. So you can walk to shelter instead of sitting 7 hours waiting for a rescue. Most of these people got stuck in town somewhere. Short walk to get somewhere that's not your stuck car.

I like driving around in snow storms as much as the next guy. I think it's fun. But act like an adult and plan accordingly if that's what you're going to do. Keep good tires on your car. If you're too cheep/poor for snow tires, keep chains in your car. Bring boots. Bring a tow strap. Bring a damn shovel. This storm wasn't a surprise, how hard is it to just load some useful shit into your car if you must go out?
Agreed. When I first moved to the state in 1988, we were instructed to think about being stranded in the vehicle in the winter:
    - Think about whether you need to go out at all
    - Always keep at least half a tank of gas in the vehicle
    - Keep winter clothes/footgear/gloves/cap, water, food, and heat source in the car (it's amazing what a little candle will do inside an enclosed volume
    - Always crack the window to let out fumes and let in fresh air when using the candle

Contemporary society has become one that just doesn't think. They let Google and Wikipedia do all their thinking for them. We need more of these storms and brown-outs to keep our society resilient (or more accurately, restore some resilience and robustness to a once proud and self-reliant society and culture).

You're right. I think this is what's it comes down to. We live in truly a great country, but an EASY one...if you want it to be. Society as a whole has gone soft as a result.

Want to go to college? Used to be hard, financially and academically. But now literally anyone can get a loan. And while you're there you can take classes that are worthless that take zero effort to pass. College is a for profit business that wants as many customers as they can muster. Come one, come all.

Want to live your life not working at all? No problem. You can have the comforts you want including cell phone and internet.

Don't want to cook, clean, maintain anything, shop, do your own laundry, mow your lawn, walk your own dog, etc etc etc? No problem, there's a service for that.

We are soft and have very few self reliant citizens anymore. Why should they be? There's an app for that...

Why shouldn't there be a service for everything? That's a major part of what makes America, America.

Any service a person could desire is fine with me. As long as the result is not fat, dumb and lazy.

Most people, unlike yourself and many others here on the forum would or have gone direct to fat, dumb and lazy already.
