The Lincoln County Sheriff's Office said just after 3 a.m., dispatch received a call about a theft in progress at milemarker 386 on US 40. When a deputy — later identified by the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office as Michael Hutton — arrived at the scene, he was "ambushed" and "shot several times," the sheriff's office said. Hutton called for assistance and several agencies responded.
The sheriff's office said it's not clear if Hutton was able to return fire.
Hutton was transported to a hospital. As of noon, he was in serious but stable condition.
