Default .222 Remington - long range?

I have a Remington 40x rifle, with an old Unertl scope, chambered in .222 Rem. I assume the twist is the standard 1:14 but have not verified it manually.

I've never shot it, but want to. The rifle setup should be able to manage long range shooting, say 600 to 1000 yards, but I don't actually know. The scope and/or cartridge may not be up to the task.

I figure one of you has to have gone down this road at some point and I would welcome any advice.

The 14 twist barrel is going to tie your hands for bullet selection.

40-55 gn bullets really get their butts kicked by the wind.

But close up, the 222 is an awesome caliber. Until the 6PPC took over benchrest matches, the 222 was king.
