Actor Ned Beatty dead at 83

Most of us knew him because of his memorable role as Bobby in Deliverance . Others may remember him as Lex Luthor's sidekick Otis in the Christopher Reeve Superman movies. And the younger among us will likely remember him as a corrupt Senator in Mark Wahlberg's Shooter.

My dad knew him as "Ned".

What most of us here didn't know (I didn't until my dad told me) was that Ned Beatty was a strong firearms rights advocate. My dad had the opportunity to sit down and talk with Ned Beatty on more than one occasion; they talked about guns and shooting. Outside of his acting career, Ned enjoyed little more than getting out and shooting. Given that this is such a rare thing in Hollywood, I'll dare say that Mr. Beatty's passing in a sad day for us all.

Dean Martin was perhaps my favorite character he played. The pretentious laugh and haughty voice were superb.
I had no idea he was a firearms proponent. A sad day indeed.
