    Default LOUD!

Independence Day. The neighbor idiot ripping past on a Yamaha XT 225 without a muffler. F-16's out of Buckley.

I have been thinking about sound a lot lately.

The loudest noise I ever heard was a 225/75-15 spare tire on my '66 CJ-5 that decided to let go about six inches from my ear. Couldn't hear out of that side for days.

My Dad's loudest noise was when he and his buddies found a case of dynamite and blew up a bridge with some of it. He permanently lost hearing during that escapade. (It was in rural Texas in the early 50's. I'm sure the statute of limitations has expired on that one).

    So...

    What's your loudest gun?
    What's your loudest noise?
Why does everyone around me MAKE SO MUCH NOISE!

Try Cape Canaveral. Shuttle landing, multiple shock waves. Loudest noise ever. Louder than a F-111 at full after burner.

Dude under my apartment window has a sweet Mustang, great sound. The problem is he uses the sound in the parking lot, underneath windows of people that are trying to conduct their lives. Idle speed is warranted when you are in your own community.

Never mind the noise pollution of the rice burners, etc. out there with the fat pipes.

I've looked up Aurora Code re: Noise Pollution, and there doesn't seem to be much there.

Detroit Diesel engines were pretty impressive. Maybe not as instantly loud as some things, but consistent.

I'm at an age now that noise is a constant bother. I live in a neighborhood where it seems like loud car stereos and mufflers are required.

The incredibly loud, sudden, abrupt and screaming “Whooosh” from a full 330 cubic foot oxygen tank that got knocked over and the valve broken off in high school metal shop. I was on the other side of the shop, a dipshit tried moving it without the cap on it.
Blew through a cinder block wall, across a lawn and into the door of a teachers car.

I don’t know what was more deafening, that or the silence afterwards.

Got a new M1 Carbine years ago (aftermarket) and was on about the 15th round of factory ammo when it had an out of battery detonation. Blew the stock in half, blew the magazine out through the floorplate (body still installed), and my dumbass wasn't wearing hearing protection because it was a "quick test" of a new gun.

I felt pressure in my ears and an angelic choir for a full two weeks. Lesson learned.
