Air Force, Raytheon conduct successful hypersonic missile test

"The HAWC free-flight test was a successful demonstration of the capabilities that will make hypersonic cruise missiles a highly effective tool for our warfighters,? said Andrew "Tippy" Knoedler, HAWC program manager in DARPA's Tactical Technology Office. "This brings us one step closer to transitioning HAWC to a program of record that offers next-generation capability to the U.S military."
    Holy hell...

What if one of these mach 5 cruise missiles overflies a populated area?

...or is that one of its capabilities as a "weapon"?

At that speed, to hit a building in Tehran you'd have to start your left turn in Albuquerque.... (with apologies to Bugs)....

I wonder what the sonic boom of said device would be.

Likely small and not noticeable at the altitudes they would fly.

I doubt that it could fly Mach 5 at low altitudes. Due to the thicker air at low altitudes, the skin of this missile might heat up to its melting point. IIRC, the SR-71 Blackbird spy plane could fly at approximately Mach 3 at 60,000 feet and above. Even up there, its skin got very hot. But who knows, maybe the Air Force has developed a tough new material composed of asbestos, Kevlar, Hilary Clinton's used panties, and Unobtainium for the missile's skin.
