    On the serious side it?s just the abbreviation for Armalite, not Armalite Rifle.. Armalite made other firearms that weren?t rifles that still used the AR prefix.

    AR-9 shotgun
    AR-13 multi barrel gun for aircraft
    AR-17 shotgun
    AR-22 blank firing device for mk19 grenade launcher
    AR-23 sub caliber training device for mk19 grenade launcher
    AR-24 9mm pistol
