I liked the senator from Kansas. He was a down to earth guy with a sharp wit and a great sense of humor. I would have liked to see him run for president years earlier. But in his 1996 run it was clear that he was too old for the job as he lacked the mental acuity, energy, and stamina necessary to campaign effectively and serve as president. He wasn't nearly as far gone as Biden is but still, it was sad to see. The party needs to stop fielding candidates based on seniority of service. I just hasn't played out well.

In the 1996 presidential race I attended a rally and speech by Bob Dole in Grand Junction. He was tired. Anticipating an autograph session at the end I passed forward my business card that identified me as president of a statewide organization. Amazingly, the card was passed back through the crowd to me with Bob Dole's signature next to the word President. It's a nice souvenir but had he prevailed in the election it might be worth framing.

    Rest in peace, Bob Dole.

He always seemed like a nice man, but he was an uninspiring, unexciting, sacrificial candidate in '96 when the R's knew they couldn't beat a very popular Clinton. He never had a chance.

Thought he was a mistake as a presidential candidate, but according to the RNC it seemed to be 'his turn'.

He was a great patriot and a class act. RIP, Mr. Dole.

Just started a new book called, "The Winter Army" about the creation of the 10th Mountain. Easy, entertaining, and interesting read thus far. I used to camp all the time at Camp Hale and just imagine what it used to be like.

Colorado Bowhunters Jamboree used to be held there every year. Spent some quality campfire time with my son telling him about the 10th and the Camp history.

Somewhere on Chicago Ridge high above Camp Hale is one of my fathers High School graduation presents, a Timex watch his mother gave him.
He lost it during "D- Exercises" that were held there in the spring of '44.
D-Series was a training exercise that 12,000 10th Mountain Division Soldiers undertook in March of 1944 in Colorado. The Soldiers equipped with 90-pound packs, skis, and snowshoes, marched to an altitude of over 13,000 feet. Over the duration of the exercise, eight feet of snow fell, and the temperature got as low as 30 degrees below zero. D-Series was often regarded by those who participated as the most difficult training of any division in World War II.

Clinton got less than 50% of the vote in both '92 and '96. It seemed to me at the time that Bob Dole was the only candidate the Republicans could have selected who could have lost to Billy Boy in '96. I respect and honor the service he gave to our country but I do blame his ego for Clinton's second term.
