I liked the senator from Kansas. He was a down to earth guy with a sharp wit and a great sense of humor. I would have liked to see him run for president years earlier. But in his 1996 run it was clear that he was too old for the job as he lacked the mental acuity, energy, and stamina necessary to campaign effectively and serve as president. He wasn't nearly as far gone as Biden is but still, it was sad to see. The party needs to stop fielding candidates based on seniority of service. I just hasn't played out well.
In the 1996 presidential race I attended a rally and speech by Bob Dole in Grand Junction. He was tired. Anticipating an autograph session at the end I passed forward my business card that identified me as president of a statewide organization. Amazingly, the card was passed back through the crowd to me with Bob Dole's signature next to the word President. It's a nice souvenir but had he prevailed in the election it might be worth framing.
Rest in peace, Bob Dole.
