Default Anyone here mess with Software Defined Radio on their PC?

I bought a RTL-SDR (Software Defined Radio) dongle for my PC and am starting to play with it. So far have only figured out FM radio band it seems like a bit of a learning curve to understand settings for each frequency band and type..

I have. It's definitely cool and popular.
If you want some guaranteed hits, look into "aprs on rtl sdr". APRS (in simple english) is Ham data that 'squawks' on 144.300 FM and is used for position reporting and some other things. It's usually 'hearable' in most built up areas.

    Are you a Ham?

No but it is not outside the realm of possibility that I would pursue it. I need to look at the current frequency allocation chart to see whats what, but the core issue is understanding settings in the software (Or even what software to choose). Short of pushing buttons and trying different settings on each signal picked up Its problematic just to guess.

I have sdrplay, messing with it. 40 and 20 meters are most active, and 2 and 70cm.

Sometimes people trip and fall down stairs.
Sometimes assholes push people down stairs.
That doesn't mean "stairs are bad" nor does it make someone who pushes someone down the stairs any less of an asshole.

Ham stuff is fun. I've been licensed since '91, and there are many aspects to the hobby. The test isn't overly difficult, basic electronics and some rules. I suggest you find a local club for help with getting licensed and getting your feet wet. The Ham crowd is interesting, from tin foil hat guys to astronauts.
There are plenty of Hams that will try and steer you into an expensive radio because reasons, but those inexpensive baofengs are just fine for getting started.

Studying for general upgrade. Hamrafioprep website has some specials going on. I like the way it works for learning.

Need my general license before I'm too old to remember anything.

Sdrplay has been fun, basic sloper wire antenna. Works well for a lot of listening.
