I saw him years ago at the Comedy Works downtown and hadn't laughed that hard in a long time. His stories growing up were strongly based on his real and difficult childhood. He was able to find a way to make them funny. Never watched Baskets either but enjoyed his standup work.
Seems like many of the good comics have difficult lives that provide for much of their material or at least a temporary way to deal with them. RIP.
