I think he pretty much HAS to retire before the 2022 midterms, because otherwise the shellacking will make it impossible to retire until 2024 at the earliest (will be impossible to get a confirmation done).

I don't know, they almost have to pick someone who isn't bat-crap crazy because it's no guarantee that Manchin/Sinema go along party lines anymore. All it takes is one of those two to vote no and the pick is kaput.
