I did think the ad was a hoot - but for mail order things I want to buy outright as many as I want - and not go the route of subscription.

Last safety razor I tried was not that safe. hmm - it might have been a clam style razor I tried (one edge on the blade). I found the handle on our old farm, so I am guessing that razor was built in the 50 - 60's.

Since we're sliding off topic and discussing our shaving preferences; I dropped the safety razors 2 years ago or so after buying a Braun Series 7 on a thanksgiving sale. It's just easier in the mornings.
A few weeks ago I realized I hadn't wet my safety razor or badger brush in over a year and removed them from the bathroom counter.

I like a '70s vintage Gillette Black Beauty or a Fat Boy.




For blades, I've settled on Personna Red. Horsehair for a brush.




Never liked the multi blades.

Brahn is the only electric razor that will work for me.

I have tried electric razors on and off over the last 35 years. I dislike them. I have owned at least 10 of them since I was 16.

My opinion only, but it takes longer to shave and does a crappier job. Realy I cant see any upside to using one. I think I have almost the same Braun electric razor. A well meaning family member gave one to my brother and me as gifts.

Yes! I've tried them over and over again, the cons far outweigh the cons. No electrics for me. I won't even try any more, sick and tired of being disappointed.

Electric razors are wonderful for the elderly as there is less of a chance for cutting the thinner, softer facial skin than there is with a traditional bladed razor. My grandfather used one every morning.

I have a new in box Braun that my wife bought for my father in law before he passed. Call it an emergency backup.

I also have a rechargeable Norelco. This is probably the 4th or 5th Norelco I've owned in my life (same brand my dad and his dad use). I've had this one for over 15 years. While I agree that electrics don't cut as cleanly or as close as a bladed razor, they fill a niche I find useful. Unless I have an important event to attend, I don't shave on the weekends and only shave every other day during the week (M, W, F). It's not that I don't need to shave daily, but being blonde makes the stubble less noticeable and skipping a day lets my sensitive skin heal between shaves. On the rare shave days I'm running late and don't have time to run a blade over my face, I can grab the Norelco and shave while sitting at red lights on my way to work. I've also found that the extra day of stubble gives the electric more to grab onto and it gives a decent shave.

I'm cheap. I'll use a blade for much longer than I probably should. Once I feel the blade starting to pull the hairs more than cutting them I switch out the blade. If I'm using a good blade to start with, I can drag out the usage for up to 2-3 months (that's 24-36 uses per blade). This isn't doable with cheaper blades, like on a disposable razor where I get maybe 2-3 uses before having to toss the razor. Like Bradbn4 said above, I don't do the subscription thing - if I need a blade, I'll buy it when I need it.

A year ago I was traveling for work and had taken a cheap disposable razor. When I arrived I found the razor was broken and unusable. At the store I found a Harry's razor with 3 blades for a really good price so I bought it. I'll confess that the blades cut very nicely. Since returning from that trip and finally running through those blades I found a box set of Harry's with a lot of blades and another new handle. I'm on the 2nd of those blades now. The remaining blades will last me at least another year. Given what I know know of Harry's, I won't be buying any more of their blades but, as I said before, they do give a nice shave. It's a shame that non-political commercial entities have to bring politics into their corporate persona and cut their own throats in doing so.

Now, all of this talk of brushes... Again, I'm cheap and I don't care to clutter my sink counter with stuff so I never use a brush or special soap. If I shave in the shower (which I do about 2/3 of the time) I simply wet the bar of soap and rub it across my face then proceed to shave. Works well enough for me to not consider anything else. If I'm shaving at the sink, I usually use Gillette gel shaving cream (I know; Gillette). The gel lathers up nicely and 1 can lasts me over a year (Gillette isn't getting much of my $$). I guess you could say, as far as my shaving rituals go, that I'm fairly low maintenance.

Ok, full disclosure - I caved in awhile back and cleaned up a mite.....

If you use disposable razor blades, and wish they lasted longer, you do know you can "strop" the blade back to true?

What I typically do is run it up my arm backwards 4-6 times before using it. I can get about twice the life out of each disposable than otherwise.

Been discussed here before, but you can also drop them into mineral oil to prevent the micro-rust and they'll stay sharp longer.
