I think you would get a better response if this wasn't in the "Concealed Carry Issues" forum.
They each have their own uses... For slower target shooting out to about 200yds, I would definitely recommend a scope, like a 3-9x variable power. Maybe something like this one:

For longer distances, a higher power scope such as a 4-16x40 or a 6-24x50 may be desirable.
For shooting under 100yds where quick target acquisition is important, I would recommend a RDS such as this one:

If you want a more accurate RDS, try an EOTech model such as this one:

Red Dot Sights have a lot of well-deserved hype surrounding them. They are fun, easy to use, and can be quite accurate out past 200 yds if used correctly. Unfortunately, they are also generally more expensive than a rifle scope of similar quality. If you plan on not having very much time to aim, or you will be shooting targets at less than 50yds, then a RDS has a pretty big advantage. However, if you are not frequently kicking in doors in Fallujah and doing room-to-room sweeps, a scope may be a better option.
I have a 3-9x40 and a 6-24x54 scope, as well as 2 Bushnell HOLOsights (http://www.opticsplanet.net/bushnell...y-price-2.html)
They each have their advantages, but when spending $$$ on an optic, I advise you to take your time, do your homework, and make a smart buy that will suit your needs so that you can be happy with your purchase. Good luck!
sorry for posting this on the concealed carry issues, im new to this form and i put it in here by accident. Once again sorry.

Thanks for the help, that help out alot.
Good replies, good point on the "forum faux pas" but the essential question is, what do you consider "long range?" What distance do you want to plink at?
My S&W M&P15, for example, is a CQ weapon. I want to put a red-dot on it. My RRA 20" A1.5 "Frankenrifle", I would consider an ACOG. It's a distance gun.
