It's amazing that these are the smallest of all the subspecies. Big animals. Beautiful up close, and I was amazed at the depth and softness of the fur.
The tenderloin I cooked up was excellent (I gave the other one to my hunting buddy). My boys ended up eating about 90% of it. We are looking forward to a relatively full freezer.
I'm hooked on moose. We've started talking about where to go to get another bull since CO limits me to the one. I need to research how the odds are on drawing a cow in CO. If it doesn't average 20 years I'll be putting in for points again next year.
I wrecked him with the shot, but he walked 340 ish yards uphill after being shot; tough animals. I was concerned we wouldn't find him since the hide and hair are so thick there wasn't a blood trail we could find. This put him 70 yards on the other side of the road. He was in the thick stuff so it wasn't an easy or straight hike back and forth from the road, but it wasn't nearly as bad as it could have been. The difficulty was compounded by working in the dark with inadequate light.
Muzzle loader. I used the Hornady Bore Driver bullets. The hole where it blew through the rib was impressive.
I saw a bigger moose back in there, but I'd been after this guy for a while. He was "big enough". Looking back, since I only get the one tag, maybe I should have gone after the bigger guy. But I liked this one at the time.
