Are they really doing paper checks for everyone?

Seems like the direct deposit pathway would be used if you had it already established with your normal state tax return.

    Yes. Paper for everyone.

$750 free! ... just pay $2,744,822 in postage and handling!

The included letter sounds like a campaign mailer, as Doc45 points out. The Colorado Republican Party agrees. They filed a complaint with the Secretary of State.

    https://www.coloradopolitics.com/col...256e1d6d4.html

"Calling the move a "political stunt," state GOP chair Kristi Burton Brown said in a statement that the governor's message describing the checks - $750 for individual taxpayers and $1,500 for joint filers -"is indistinguishable from a campaign mailer" from Polis, who is running for reelection this year."

"Typically, when the state takes in more money than allowed under TABOR...it's refunded to taxpayers using several methods...This year, however, bipartisan legislation signed by Polis established an additional, one-time mechanism - dubbed the Colorado CashBack by lawmakers - to deliver a portion of the surplus nearly a year ahead of schedule in the checks going out this month... critics contend it's a blatant attempt to curry favor with voters, who start returning mail ballots in mid-October."

""Jared Polis is blatantly using taxpayer dollars to help himself get re-elected," Burton Brown said in a statement..."

The only reason I can find stated is to "combat fraud attempts", because a check is less susceptible to fraud than direct deposit...

Even Colorado Public Radio is dubious.

"So taxpayers will be getting these checks this summer, when there's an election just around the corner in the fall. That seems convenient.

Sure is. Governor Polis, who spearheaded the idea at the legislature, has branded it as the Colorado Cashback.

Democrats have taken some criticism from conservatives who say this is just a way to make them look good ahead of the midterms..."

It's bullshit that some people pay a ton of taxes and others close to nothing but we all get the same 'refund'.

In actuality, the Triple-D would prefer it even more out balance- enhanced "refunds" to those who pay the least (or zero) into the system. They couldn't quite swing that this time...

Emailed the state 2-3 months ago about the fact I'm out of state and where and how I'm getting my fucking check. That it doesn't direct deposit to last account used is horseshit but they want to do this faggot letter. Now I'm debating if I write a letter to the folk thjat got my home a month ago saying I know this check is coming...

If by out of balance, you mean zero, you are correct. Many members of the Colorado House tried to get TABOR repealed. Governor Polis has tried as well.

The "special bill" that produced this year's checks will decrease next year's surplus by $30- $40 million.

Polis is running for re-election this year.

Depending on which way the political winds blow, he will be running for President in '28 or '32. This looks great on his resume to people that are not aware of TABOR.

The Triple-D would love for "special payments" to go to their favorite target constituencies even if Tabor is ended. How better to secure votes...
