Default North Carolina Power Grid Sabotage

    https://www.cnn.com/2022/12/05/us/power-outage-moore-county-investigation-monday/index.html

"The mass outage in Moore County turned into a criminal investigation when responding utility crews found signs of potential vandalism of equipment at different sites ? including two substations that had been damaged by gunfire, according to the Moore County Sheriff?s Office.

...the sheriff on Sunday addressed rumors circulating on social media that the attack was an attempt to thwart a local drag show.
Fields said investigators ?have not been able to tie anything back to the drag show,? which was scheduled in the town of Southern Pines at 7 p.m. Saturday, around the time the power went out."

I think this shows the fragility of our power supply system.

It also shows how media outlets are quick to point the finger at anything that may be anti-gay.

There was an attack on a substation in California a few years ago that was never solved. Basically a team of shooters acted in a coordinated attack cutting communications/alarm lines and then shot up the sub station.

Metcalf Substation near San Jose, CA. Technically this did not cause much of an issue on the grid if I remember correctly.

Incident is fairly close to Fort Bragg. Wonder if AP rounds were used? Makes me think it might be an attempt to disrupt operations. Euro theater or just local vandals? I would't be surprised if utilities add cameras and various sensors to sub-stations soon.

Police and some locals are speculating, it was kids who wanted an extended snow day. Unfortunately everything in todays instant gratification 40/7media is domestic terrorism. Which usually when the truth comes out was nothing close. Like the still pushed.. hands up, don't shoot.

Back in the early 90s I worked in a screen printing shop for a guy that was a former "NRC Armed Responder" at Diablo Canyon nuclear power plant in California in the mid 80s (he was also a former AP). Basically he patrolled the grounds with an M16 keeping an eye on things.

He said he routinely found holes cut in the fences surrounding the reactor building and every time he reported them he was ignored by both the security and the maintenance people.

Our power grid has been vulnerable for decades. I'm honestly surprised we haven't had a serious "grid down" event by now.

Trivia: I was going to Cal Poly while that was being built. Know the guy that planned the rotation of the nuclear fuel for startup and steady state.

I would like to know the details. What equipment was shot and how precisely? What weapon was used? Was it just random shooting "spray and pray" that happened to hit something important, or is it someone with knowledge of the sensitive, high impact, non replaceable equipment?
In other words, how much knowledge and skill would it have taken to do this. Seems like those details will sort out the bad guys from the riff raff.

News articles have the sheriff saying that the shooter knew exactly what they were doing. Two dozen shots to take out power to a large area does not seem like someone who got bored of plinking stop signs.
I am not smart enough to edit the "title"
