Yep... The coop is ready. Just waiting for springtime to get some chicks. By the end of next year we'll be damn near food self-sufficient.

Right before Thanksgiving and for several days after all the stores around me were out for several days, King Sooper's, Costco, Walmart, no one had them. Prices have been going up for a while too.

Price on eggs here in Kansas has gone nuts. I get the jumbo eggs and a few months ago, a dozen jumbo eggs here was around $2.50 ... now they're more than $5.

Kid told us $7. on N. central ca. Which pisses her off as her chickens are down to maybe 1 egg a day.. Winter lowers home supply, raises store supply, . Throw in the .gov is killing them off. Just wait, till the gov does here, what denmark did to their farmers.

For awhile, keeping chickens was more break even, justified by "oh the eggs taste better" or "I enjoy keeping birds". Now, even with higher feed costs, it is well worth the effort.

I have been watching both Sam's club & CostCo and seeing reduced stock & limits on how many eggs you can buy. Sometimes it might go a few months were everything is good...once I did see the local CostCo was down to less than 1/2 of a pallet.

I figure with the kill off of chickens + holiday season - supply will remain tight.
