montana plates

I seem to recall something mentioned about an LLC and Montana plates a while back but couldn't find it. Has anyone done this and had success?
Wondering if I do this will I be impacted by the new tag laws just passed. Considering this only because I may not be able to renew my plates
due to emissions on a 39 year old Jeep.

It's not the best solution. if you get collector plates, you only have to smog it every 5 years. Crazy that we have to smog vehicles they might not have parts for. I got rid of a clean 79 VW van. It was a California emissions model, almost impossible to get it to pass.

I did get collector plates for it but bought it after 2009 so ya its every 5 years. I dumped the carb and did the 50 state legal fuel injection (signed off by air care 10 years ago). However the last smog (5 years ago) I was told it was a polluter an I should sell it and
buy something else by the Aircare staff, it passed but they said my paperwork was not the new updated form and that it would have to be reinspected at a special facility. Its the same old thing at these places and frustrating, they seem to be more concerned
with what you have on it or done to it vs whats actually coming out of the pipe.

Love the classic CJ7 and even more with fuel injection but its always a struggle and getting worse every time I have to go to emissions. I think its worth spending the money to just do the Montana plates and be done with it however
I understand there is a new law (last couple of months) where they are fining people with out of state plates.

I honestly don't know what to do.

You can title in Vermont and South Dakota without being a resident nor having an LLC. The Montana LLC is a better work around for big ticket items because of the tax shelter.
Colorado is balls deep in C.A.R.B. regulations thanks to Howdy Doody Dickinpooper and Polis did no favors either.

The easiest thing would to register it somewhere else in Colorado where emissions tests aren?t required. You?ll still be rolling with a Colorado plate and won?t have to worry about getting it tested.

As far as getting your Jeep to pass emissions, you could switch to full synthetic oil and see what happens. It isn?t hydrocarbon based so if your engine has some cylinder or ring wear or questionable valve seals and is burning something other than the air/fuel mixture running the synthetic oil could clean it up a bit.

Do you remember if it is NOX or CO you were having trouble with or both?

My 79 Jeep, registered in Boulder County, has collectors plates since either 2004 or 2009 and is grandfathered from needing any more emissions testing.

Not sure how much time you have left; but if your vehicle passes emissions and you just get hassled by the testers, then make sure you do one of the rapid-screen drive through stations on the road 60 or so days before your tags expire. Solid advice. I'm doing it next time I need to smog my 93 5.0. They struggled with the shifting and drove it for 10, had to restart the IM240 machine drove it another 20 minutes. The fuel gauge moved more than you think.
