    Default Flying united with rifles?

I have a flight coming up on United and wanted to return with some of my rifles that are stored here. I have one of those double rifle cases from harbor freight. Am I going to get raked over the coals with fees flying with it? It's 53x16. I know what their policy says, but wanted to reach out to see if anyone had experience with that particular airline in a similar situation.
I'm willing to pay a little extra, but if it's $200, I'll just drive back another day.

Why not ship them to yourself?

    OP:
Last time I flew with them it was the same story as always.......... no issues.
It's a checked bag and what ever the checked bag fee is.............. there you go.

Anything over 62 linear inches might get you an oversize bag fee. You can find travel cases that come up to 61.5"

The oversized bag fee shouldn't apply because a rifle case would be covered under sporting goods.. just like skis, you don't pay extra for skis or snowboards, just the regular checked bag fee.

I don't see where the oversize doesn't apply there.

For what its worth........ I flew with a large hard sided case and all they were worried about was the weight.

    YMMV.

Firearms are included as part of your regular checked bags allowance just as skis are. “ Firearms carried in addition to the free baggage allowance will be assessed at the current excess baggage charge”

Sporting goods items such as fishing rods that may incur oversized luggage charges are specifically spelled out as having specific size limits.

If for some reason a firearm case would be declared oversize, the United oversize limit is 115 inches total which is determined by measuring length+width+height. So you could have a 62 inch long rifle case as long as the width plus the height doesn’t break the 115 inch rule.

Source? I cannot find that terminology anywhere I look
