When I hear about these events, I start to think about how, in order to keep its freedom, a nation needs to be just and good. Not only institutionally, but just and good in our homes and families. I actually think a society can be corrupt enough that it deserves a ruler with an iron fist. Think of Iraq and Saddam; my understanding is his tyrannical rule was the only thing keeping the separate groups from warring and destroying the country. Or think of Syria, with 2 sides in a fight and both of them constantly posting sick videos online of them torturing the people they captured. America seems to have a whole lot of nihilistic, merciless, angry and hopeless people out there. And those people have a lot of freedom to carry out whatever sick plans they have. We live in a weird time where it looks like the supreme court is going to start making rulings that will force states to finally fully respect the 2A, but at a time where our culture is least deserving of that freedom. The declining culture is a great reason to defend our 2A rights because we need to be able to defend ourselves. The other side of the coin is that those same rights enable others to pose an increasingly greater threat to us, and we have more to defend against. It is a downward path that won't change unless our culture changes.
