    Default Impact resistant shingles

Is it worth it to upgrade to class IV IR shingles? Just wondering if anyone has any thoughts on this

We have always had class IV impact resistant. Got a decent discount from insurance carrier and they have done well with hail up to golf ball size. Only damage has been from larger than golf ball sized hail and those were baseball sized.

Depending on where you live, I think some code requires it if you are replacing your roof.

When I replaced the roof for the third time in 2 years, back circa 2011-2012, I put the impact resistant shingles on. They appear to have held up under the constant barrage of hail my neighborhood gets.

Yes. Besides a possible better insurance rate, they work.

My buddy in the Springs got hit with golf ball sized on Saturday. Three cars smashed but his two year old roof looks fine. Some neighbors didn't fare as well.

We were in the golf ball-sized hail that hit Saturday.

Wife's new CR-V was in the garage. F-250 was under the Hail Protector. Older Civic was out as we were running errands away from home - no damage.

Neighbor showed me a pic of the hail we received. He (and others) had been laughing at my "alien space slug" Hail Protector but even that neighbor had to admit he watched how effortlessly it deflected the hail from the F250.

I'm not looking forward to dealing with my insurance company over replacing my roof as I've got a bad history from 2005 when we tried filing our last (and first) hail damage claim with them.

I'm on my third roof in 7 years. Have had impact shingles installed the last two times. Hasn't made much of a difference once the hail gets big it trashes the roof no matter what it seems. If you live where you see small hail every year it might help, but like I said before if the hail is larger it makes no difference.

I keep thinking I should get a metal roof. I have had the roof repaired a dozen times. The wind just rips the shingles off.
I'm on a high point in the area. I thought I was smart and would be flood free. Instead I got wind and lightning strikes.

    What beast556 said

I've written to replace a 2 year old impact resistant roof recently. Anything above 2" hail will tear up any shingle.

Stone coated steel works pretty well and looks close to normal shingles.

    I scope about 200 roofs a year.
