Default It's not your sewer, its your freezer

Sewer smell started last week near the basement drain. Since it is all about 12 years old, and no water ever goes down that, I figured it was the water in the trap having evaporated, but adding 2 buckets worth didn't help. Smell got worse while I waited too get a plumber in. He shows up yesterday and I show him the offending drain. He says "Sir I see that chest freezer says it running but could you please confirm it is actually cold?"

I won't share how nasty the cleanup was. Even triple-bagged the garbage can is still drawing flies from miles.

Next freezer I get will need to have an over-temp alarm or something.

Cheap insurance. I use only on both of my freezers. (Im sure any brand, model like this would work though)

If you drain dries up again, use RV antifreeze in the drains. I doesn't evaporate.

Someone turned off my chest freezer once....lost a lot of beef

My father in law didn't shut his standup freezer all the way, the door was about an inch open. He then went on vacation to SW MO to visit our family. When he returned he knew immediately there was a problem.

I defrosted my freezer yesterday, thanks for the reminder to make sure it's working!

The RV antifreeze I have been using the last several years definitely evaporates in the camper toilet. I don't recall the brand name, but it is the pink stuff that most shops have. I have since learned once I winterize it, the bowl gets covered in saran wrap.

Makes sense, since it's usually a good bit of water with Propylene glycol.

A layer of mineral oil on the top of the water/anti-freeze will stop the evaporation.
