JAL Airbus 350 landing collision w/DH Dash-8

This just happened Tuesday in Japan. The Dash-8 was a Japan Coast Guard plane ferrying personnel to earthquake areas, it was waiting to take off. The Airbus hit it right after it touched down.

5 crew were killed in the Coast Guard plane but ALL 360 passengers escaped the burning wreckage in 90 seconds! Supposedly, this is the first total loss of a composite built airliner and questions will come up about the materials rate of burn and how well the fire was extinguished. Not to mention toxic fumes from epoxy type composites.

It's amazing that 4 people per second were evacuated from that plane, the whole thing is in flames! Link to video below.

Nope. Runway lights were on. Some lights on the taxiway were out.

Still no excuse for an aircraft to get on the runway without clearance.

Every large commercial aircraft operated by an airline or cargo outfit will have egpws, and most certainly every military aircraft will. Detecting other aircraft is Not the function of EGPWS as its purpose is to avoid CFIT into terrain. Closest system that would be to this would be TCAS and it doesn’t do ground threats as it is attenuated at low altitude above ground level (I want to say 250’ IIRC). Most likely ,This is either a pilot or ATC error with the coast guard plane most likely causing the runway incursion.

Amazing that the crew and passengers of the A350 fared so well.

You can see the A350 on approach around 3:20.

I believe you can see the Dash-8 taxiing earlier in the video prior to the collision.

Initial report I read, said taxiway control lights were inoperative. It said Japan Coast Guard aircraft entered runway due to this. I never have been to Haneda Airport. Every airport is different. I'm sure the mishap report will explain better than the media.
