I am an old 1911 guy, been shooting/carrying them for 55 years. I recently picked up Springfield’s new Garrison Commander in stainless. It’s amazing at a great price. I no longer care for lightweight frames in my 45s but if that’s any interest I’d look at their Ronin Commander. As much of a 1911 fan as I am it seems those less than 4.25” seem to run into cycling issues. I had a couple Colt Defenders and while great for carry they did have issues running reliably with hp ammo. I’ve had a few 4”, Wilson and Springfield-they are fine.

I put standard width grips on the Garrison, a Novak front night sight and a 10-8 rear sight. I just got clearance from my eye surgeon after cataract surgery to start shooting again, I’ll be running it this afternoon.

If I was looking into a 1911 carry gun I'd probably get a Springfield Armory (excellent price/performance point) and an S&A mag guide and call it done.

    20, 25 years ago I wouldn't have touched a Springfield with a 10 foot pole, but that's all changed.

I bought a Brazilian Springfield Micro Compact GI (all-steel, 3", officer's grip) in the mid-00's and had it customized with night sights and an ambi-safety. With less than 300 rounds, it locked-up tight mid stroke. After coming back from the mothership it was sold with full disclosure.

I have the full size GI in 9mm. Only issue was broken ejector at about 5K rounds. I ordered generic ejector from Brownells, spent 10 mins hand fitting and back up running.

If you are not set on a 1911 then a 3rd gen metal/aluminum S&W makes for a good balance. 4? and change, have not had an issue with feeding or firing. Can be had as da/sa, or dao which makes it act like a revolver. 2nd gens have a lighter pull on dao due to 1/2 cock vs 1/4 cock configuration in case you need easier pull.
