    Default Baltimore Bridge Collapse

    https://www.cnn.com/us/live-news/bal...-24/index.html

You probably seen it by now. One of those giant container vessels bumped into the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore Harbor. The bridge went down incredibly quickly. Several people have been killed, some are still missing. President Biden is pledging to rebuild.

With federal money involved, and Baltimore, being what it is, the new bridge will obviously have a new name. Because of course... slavery.

Any guesses what the new structure will be called?

    The Joe Lieberman bridge?
Laws aren't "preventable" measures. IOW, more gun laws won't stop mass shootings.

There is a fair chance it will be named after a black woman from Baltimore, who was involved in the civil rights movement.

I'm sure the bridge was well illuminated for passenger traffic over it. Probably not so well lit up for the vessel traffic below it!

As I gather from the recent reports
    2 Pilots aboard.
Power failure causing failure of steerage.
    Emergency generator caught fire.
Calls out for assistance with tugs too late for them to arrive
Dropped anchor to slow vessel, but not effective
Mayday with 90 Seconds to close bridge and the police reacted immediately saving multiple vehicles
NTSB investigation and recommendations should be interesting

Once ya lose power to that many tons, well it kinda like a train, it don't stop on a dime, let alone turn on a nickel. All reports I've seen so far are saying lose if power and the ship was calling out may day distress calls

    https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/...hip-force.html

"And our higher-end estimates, reviewed by several civil engineering experts, suggest it is realistic to put the force of the impact with the pier at upward of 100 million newtons."

    EXAMPLE APPROXIMATE FORCE(IN NEWTONS)
    Fully loaded 18-wheeler colliding with a bridge at 80 m.p.h. 1 million
Force required to slow the fully loaded Dali over 38 seconds 12 million
Saturn V rocket thrust at launch 35 million

“Depending on the size of the container ship, the bridge doesn't have any chance,” said Nii Attoh-Okine, a professor of engineering at the University of Maryland."

The new George Floyd Memorial Bridge will be built to modern standards, with stronger piers or protection systems around the piers that can either absorb or deflect the force of ship collisions.
