One thing many people fail to understand- propeller driven watercraft regardless of size don’t “steer” as you think of it- the bow doesn’t move into the intended direction of a turn like a car or similar. The stern “skids” to the outside of the intended direction because of water flowing over the rudder surface and that initiates the turn.
Without thrust over the rudder surface there is no steering.
When it lost power it was a slow traveling multi million ton battering ram.
